Charlotte believes that she has seen two faces in the hold of the ship. She concludes that to herself that she is being warned. She says, "There were too many puzzles. Too many complexities. Unable to fathom the mystery I ended up scolding myself, convinced that I was making something out of nothing."

Charlotte is not believing her own thoughts and instincts. She is on a ship without anyone to talk the problems over with. How could a friend have helped Charlotte through her problems? What art the difficulties in trying to solve problems alone?

Describe Charlottes's character traits in the space provided after each question. Take the facts from the book and draw conclusions as to what this tells us about Charlotte.


Lesson 1 Topic: Charlotte must travel from England to Providence, R.I. by ship without her family

1. Charlotte's father must relocate to Providence from England. He decides to leave Charlotte behind
to finish her school year at Barrington School for Better Girls. Charlotte's mother agrees with
her husband. The family leaves Charlotte behind. Describe Charloete's character traits, and how she feels about her parents' dicisions.

Charloette is a clever girl, who takes notice to everything around her. Becasue Charloette is so clever, she is able to comprehend what is going to happen on the ship. Charloette feels scared,uneasy, and awkward. She feels that it is improper to travel on a ship with a crew of men.

2. Charlotte finishes her year at school and is taken to the docks by Mr. Grummage. He is very impatient with her many questions. Even though he learns that the other families have backed out of the voyage, Mr. Grummage decides to leave Charlotte on the ship.

The Problem in Lesson 1: Charlotte has been taken from the safe environment of Barrington School for Better Girls and dropped off at the dock of a ship. She must travel across the Atlantic with a ship full of strangers and is the only female on this long voyage. She was supposed to travel with two other families, including other women.
